Finland celebrates its centenary of independence in 2017 and Latvia in 2018. Our countries are geographically close to each other. Also our relations in the sphere of politics, economy, culture and civil contacts are close. Therefore it is just natural that Finland's jubilee is also reflected in Latvia.
The theme „Finland 100” and its logos have been seen already at the beginning of the year in the capital Riga as well as in other places in Latvia during events organized by the Embassy of Finland in Latvia and its partners. For example concerts dedicated to the centenary of Finland performed by Orchestra of Latvian Defence Forces in Valmiera and in Jelgava conducted by Jyrki Koskinen, the chief conductor of the Finnish Defence forces, wonderful Finnish documentary films on Finnish nature " Tale of Lake" and "Tale of Forest” presented at the Nordic Film week in Daugavpils, Europe Day events in Riga, as well as the premiere of
Wagner's opera "Tannhäuser " at the Latvian National Opera where several Finnish artists take part.
Beginning of summer is already traditionally marked in Riga by a garden party organized by Team Finland in Latvia in the garden of the embassy (7.6.). The theme of his event where Finnish companies and their Latvian business partners meet is this year of course "Finland 100".
Summer is festival time both in Finland and Latvia. In Latvia you will be able to spot the logo of Finland 100 e.g. at the festival "LAMPA" in Cesis (31.6.-1.7.), at the Liv´s Festival in Mazirbe (5.8.) and at the summer concert of the Orkester Norden at the Dzintari Concert Hall in Jurmala (20.8.), where the theme of the concert will be dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Finland. In addition, the contemporary circus and street festival ReRiga (23.-25.8.) will include Finnish artists this year. Both local inhabitants as well as visitors to Latvia are most welcome to attend these events.
In the autumn Finland will be celebrated in Riga through a photo exhibition "Independence Through the Lenses" in the Photography museum, an exhibition "Tapio Wirkkala - a poet in Glass and Silver" at the Decorative Art and Design Museum. Also an exhibition of the Finnish contemporary art museum “KIASMA" is planned to be held at the art museum „Rīgas birža”.
Finland's jubilee year in Latvia will culminate with different events around our independence day, which is celebrated on the 6th of December. However, also Latvia's centennial jubilee year 2018 provides us with excellent possibilities to remember also Finland's centenary, for example, opening of the visiting exhibition "100 objects from Finland" in Riga or attending the events dedicated to centenary of the Finnish jaegers in Latvia in February in Liepaja.
