Former Finnish President Mauno Koivisto passed away in Helsinki on 12 May 2017. He was 93 years old.
Mauno Koivisto was the ninth President of the Republic of Finland for 12 years, from 1982 to 1994. Before his presidency, he served as Prime Minister, Minister of Finance as well as Governor of the Bank of Finland. President Koivisto was the first western leader to make a working visit to Latvia in 1992, soon after Latvia’s Restoration of Independence.
A book of condolence will be opened at the Embassy of Finland in Riga for anyone wishing to present their condolences on the passing of President Koivisto. Opening hours are Thursday, May 18th 13:00-15:00 and Friday, May 19th 09:00-11:00.
